Military Service Procedures for Undergraduate Students

Military service procedures are carried out in accordance with the provisions of the Military Recruitment Law No. 7179 (https://asal.msb.gov.tr).

For newly enrolled students who are of military draft age, as well as those who have already been enrolled but have newly reached draft age, deferment is granted for the maximum duration of study as determined by the university. Students who have not graduated by the end of the maximum study period may continue to have their military service deferred until the end of the year in which they turn 28, provided that they have renewed their enrollment for at least one semester in each academic year.

Graduates who have completed a bachelor’s degree from a faculty or school of higher education are entitled to a two-year deferment starting from the date of graduation.

Individuals who have graduated from a higher education institution and enroll in a second program at the same level are not eligible for a deferment based on their new enrollment.

You can check your military service status at: https://www.turkiye.gov.tr/askerlik-durum-belgesi-sorgulama

Note: Students who enrolled in or before the 2018-2019 Spring Semester are subject to the former Military Service Law No. 1111, whereas those who enrolled from the 2019-2020 Fall Semester onwards are subject to the Military Recruitment Law No. 7179.

Military Service Procedures for Graduate Students

Military service procedures for newly enrolled students are carried out in accordance with the provisions of the Military Recruitment Law No. 7179 (https://asal.msb.gov.tr).

No military service procedures are conducted for individuals who are classified as draft evaders or who have already exceeded their conscription deadline before registration.

For Master’s students, military service deferment may be granted until the end of the calendar year in which they turn 32, and for PhD students until the end of the year in which they turn 35.

Deferment periods for postgraduate programs:

  • Scientific Preparation Program: 1 year
  • Master’s Program with Thesis: 6 semesters
  • Master’s Program without Thesis: 3 semesters
  • Doctoral Program: 12 semesters
  • Doctoral Program following a Bachelor’s Degree: 14 semesters

If newly enrolled students already have an active deferment granted by another institution or university, a new deferment request cannot be processed until the existing deferment is canceled.

Graduates holding a master’s degree may have their military service deferred for one year from the date of graduation upon application to their local military branch.

Those who complete their doctoral studies are not legally eligible for a deferment based on graduation status.

Note: Students who enrolled in or before the 2018-2019 Spring Semester are subject to the former Military Service Law No. 1111 while those who enrolled from the 2019-2020 Fall Semester onwards are subject to the Military Recruitment Law No. 7179.

  • Foreign students who are subject to military obligations are responsible for following and managing their own military service procedures in accordance with the legislation of their home countries.
  • Military service deferment procedures are carried out by the Directorate of Student Affairs following registration. Students are not required to take any individual action regarding these procedures.
