HEPP is mandatory for students enrolled in programs where the medium of instruction is fully or partially English. Students enrolled in programs with Turkish as the medium of instruction who wish to attend HEPP must inform the Student Affairs Office during the registration process.
The Haliç University English Preparatory Program (HEPP) lasts one academic year and consists of 4 modules. Each module is 8 weeks long. Students placed at the B2 level are eligible to take the Proficiency Exam. The B2 level can be studied during the Fall semester, Spring semester, or Summer School.
A student may be exempted from HEPP by:
Equivalency:
For the updated equivalency table, please refer to:
Students who have studied at another university’s Preparatory School and hold a diploma confirming B2 level (CEFR) proficiency may also be exempted from HEPP (official documents must be submitted; documents are valid for a maximum of three years).
Each student is first required to take the Haliç University English Preparatory Program Placement Exam (HEPPLACE). Students who are placed at B2 (CEFR) level after this exam become eligible to take the Haliç University English Preparatory Program Proficiency Test (HEPPTEST).
HEPPLACE is not an achievement test. Its primary purpose is to determine students’ level of English. HEPPLACE is a multiple-choice exam consisting of grammar and vocabulary sections. Results are announced on the official HEPP website. Based on HEPPLACE results, students are placed into classes appropriate to their level. Students who score 60 or above out of 100 are eligible to sit the Proficiency Exam (HEPPTEST).

The HEPPTEST is designed to evaluate students’ English language proficiency:
You can access this information on the official HEPP website.
Students may submit a petition to the HEPP administration. All appeals must be made in writing within three (3) days following the announcement of the exam results.
All forms and petitions can be accessed through the official HEPP website or obtained from the HEPP Secretariat.
In HEPP, English language education is based on the modular system at levels A1, A2, B1, and B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). One academic year in HEPP consists of four modules, each lasting eight weeks. Based on the results of HEPPLACE, students are placed into their appropriate level: A1, A2, B1, or B2.
In order for a student to be eligible to take the Module Exit Test (MET), they must fulfill the attendance requirements of the school. Furthermore, in order to progress to the next level, students must successfully complete each module with a minimum overall score of 60 out of 100 and be eligible to sit for the MET.
The modular system has a flexible structure that responds quickly to changes. The rationale behind the modular system is that it allows students to progress at their own pace while receiving immediate feedback on their achievement. At the same time, the system enables closer monitoring of learner development within shorter periods, thereby contributing to the overall quality of our language education.
Yes, regular attendance is mandatory in HEPP. Learners at all levels must fulfill the attendance requirements of each module in order to be eligible to sit the Module Exit Test (MET) at the end of that module. Students are responsible for attending classes regularly, and their attendance is monitored and reported with the guidance of their Main Instructor (MI).
For each module, the maximum absence limit-whether excused or unexcused-is 20% of the total course hours of that module.
No, even if you submit a medical report, you will still be marked as absent. Medical reports obtained due to illness are not deducted from the total absence record.
Such reports are only considered valid if they are officially accepted by the University and approved upon evaluation by the HEPP Administration.
No one can be deprived of the right to education. For this reason, latecomers are allowed to enter the classroom only during the first five minutes of the class (i.e., between 10:00 and 10:05); however, they will still be marked as absent.
You can check your course grades and attendance record with the assistance of your Main Instructor (MI).
Classes are organized in accordance with certain academic principles and physical conditions. Therefore, such requests are not accepted by the HEPP Administration, except in extraordinary circumstances. Extraordinary cases are handled in a timely and considerate manner. For example, they may include, but are not limited to, students undergoing medical treatment.
There is no make-up for quizzes or tasks. Students may take a make-up exam for the Module Midterm Test (MMT) and/or the Module Exit Test (MET), provided that the medical report they submit is accepted by the HEPP Administration. Medical reports must be submitted to the HEPP Secretariat within three (3) working days following the date of issue.
Students must record a video of their problem and/or provide official documents as evidence to support their claim. Only when this condition is met will they be granted the right to take a make-up exam.
Participation in the Orientation Meeting is mandatory, as it provides detailed information about HEPP. During the Orientation Meeting, comprehensive information regarding HEPP will be delivered, and all questions from students will be addressed. If you do not attend, you may miss important academic information concerning rules, regulations, and the requirements you are expected to meet.
The date and time of the Orientation Meeting will be announced on the official HEPP website under the Announcements section.
Yes. These students must complete the “English Preparatory Participation Application Form” during registration, indicating their intention to join the program. Students who complete this form will be considered to have accepted all terms and conditions of HEPP. Those who do not complete the form or do not declare their intention to do so will not be accepted into the program and will be placed in their respective departments.
HEPP offers students various opportunities, such as:
Yes, there is an 8-week Summer School offered as the fifth and final module of the academic year at the B2 level. Through Summer School, students have the opportunity to complete HEPP within a single academic year. Designed to equip students with the necessary skills and support them in achieving their goals, Summer School enables them to continue their faculty education without interruption.
Students are required to contact the Accounting Office and the Student Affairs Office.
Students who fail at the B2 level and/or those who successfully complete the B1 level module may attend the Summer School in order to complete their English preparatory education within a single academic year.
Students are required to check the academic calendar, which is published annually on our website.
Yes. At the end of the Summer School, students are required to pass the HEPPTEST with a minimum score of 60 out of 100. Detailed information regarding the HEPPTEST administered at the end of the Summer School is announced on our website in a timely manner for students attending the program.
All students registered in HEPP from the previous academic year, regardless of their level, are entitled to take the HEPPTEST administered at the beginning of the new academic year. If they fail again, they will be re-placed into HEPP classes based on their academic performance in the program and their previous level.
