Our University participated in the launch of the Smoke-Free Campus, Healthy Future Project, an initiative jointly implemented by the Turkish Ministry of Health, the Council of Higher Education (YÖK), and the Turkish Green Crescent Society (Yeşilay). Held in Istanbul, the launch event introduced the project to the public and highlighted efforts to expand smoke-free campus practices, promote a culture of healthy living, and strengthen tobacco control initiatives across higher education institutions.
The event, held at Sepetçiler Pavilion, the headquarters of Yeşilay, was attended by Minister of Health Prof. Kemal Memişoğlu, President of the Council of Higher Education Prof. Erol Özvar, President of the Turkish Green Crescent Society Assoc. Prof. Mehmet Dinç, our Vice Rector Prof. Öykü İyigün, Director of Campus Life Muhammed Sacit Çakır, President of the Yeşilay Student Club Ensar Bilgin, and members of the student club.
During the event, speakers emphasized the importance of expanding smoke-free campus practices across the country to encourage young people to adopt healthy lifestyles free from tobacco and tobacco products. They also reaffirmed their commitment to reducing the use of cigarettes and other tobacco products on university campuses, underscoring the vital role of higher education institutions as key partners in preventing addiction.
The launch also highlighted the importance of fostering a culture of healthy living within higher education institutions and addressing addiction through a comprehensive and holistic approach. Speakers stressed that supporting students’ physical and mental well-being alongside their academic achievement is a shared social responsibility.
As part of the program, the Smoke-Free Campus Guide was introduced. The guide provides higher education institutions with a framework for implementing smoke-free campus policies by outlining core and sustainability criteria, as well as practical guidance and examples of good practice to support their effective implementation.
The project aims to strengthen institutional capacity for tobacco control in higher education institutions, establish common standards, promote the dissemination of best practices, and raise awareness of healthy living across university campuses.
