The solo exhibition “From Spinoza’s Ethics to 17th-Century Dutch Painting” by Asst. Prof. Ümran Özbalcı Aria, a faculty member in the Department of Cartoon and Animation at Faculty of Fine Arts, opened to art enthusiasts at Podium Mozaïek, one of Amsterdam’s cultural venues. The exhibition brings together Spinoza’s philosophy and 17th-century Dutch painting through a contemporary interpretation.
In the exhibition, which opened on July 2, 2026, Asst. Prof. Ümran Özbalcı Aria reinterprets works by Dutch painters such as Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Frans Hals using digital techniques. Exploring the relationship between light, human beings, nature, and space through the lens of Spinoza’s philosophy, the artist brings the classical painting tradition together with contemporary technologies.
To promote the exhibition’s cultural exchange dimension, a mandala workshop was also held with the participation of Turkish women living in Amsterdam who had no prior experience in painting. Enabling participants to engage directly with art, the workshop supported the exhibition’s inclusive approach to diverse experiences and forms of participation.
The exhibition continues Aria’s academic research and artistic practice, developed over many years. Drawing on her 1999 study of “Portraiture in 17th-Century Dutch Painting,” undertaken as part of her artistic proficiency program, the exhibition demonstrates how academic research can be transformed into visual expression.
Aria describes the exhibition’s approach with the words, “Every pixel is a part of matter; every algorithm is a law of nature.” The exhibition’s manifesto also highlights the relationship between the pursuit of light and reality in 17th-century Dutch art and Spinoza’s philosophy, centered on nature and reason.
Mahmut Burak Ersoy, Consul General of the Republic of Türkiye in Amsterdam, attended the exhibition’s opening, viewed the exhibition, and congratulated the artist. The opening also brought together numerous guests from the worlds of art, literature, film directing, and business.
Hosted by Podium Mozaïek for three months, the exhibition will remain open to visitors until September 28, 2026.
