The solo sculpture exhibition “Temporary Residences” by Asst. Prof. Savaş Sarıhan, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts and a faculty member in the Department of Cartoon and Animation, will be open to visitors at Rami Library until September 16. Addressing the phenomenon of migration through the concepts of people, space, belonging and memory, the exhibition transforms ordinary objects from everyday life into elements of an artistic narrative.
Suitcases, shoes, old letters, fabrics and sacks featured in the exhibition stand out as elements reflecting the emotions of travel, separation, leaving things behind and starting anew. Bringing together wooden suitcases he has crafted himself and various found objects, Sarıhan explores the traces left by the experience of migration on individuals through the concepts of memory and belonging.
Emphasizing that the works in the exhibition consist of more than objects alone, Sarıhan described the process behind “Temporary Residences” as follows:
“Temporary Residences is not merely a collection of wooden suitcases I have crafted or found objects I have brought together; it is a contemplative journey centered on belonging, memory and the ever-changing nature of human life. The wooden suitcases I shape with my own hands serve as shelters, while the children’s shoes, old letters, fabrics and sacks placed alongside them are silent witnesses to lived experiences. These objects are fragments that once touched someone’s life and accumulated memories. By bringing them together with the warmth of wood, I aimed to evoke the transience of time and the emotional burdens we carry with us despite everything. I hope that these works, which become integrated with the historical texture of Rami Library, will remind viewers of their own inner journeys, what they have left behind and the ‘temporary’ moments they carry with them.”
