A research project led by Research Assistant Vildan Fidanoğlu from the Department of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation at the Faculty of Health Sciences has been awarded funding under the TÜBİTAK 1002-A Rapid Support Program.
The project, titled “Investigation of the Effects of Inspiratory Muscle Training and Dual-Task-Oriented Inspiratory Muscle Training on Cognitive Functions in Heart Failure,” will examine the potential impact of inspiratory muscle training on cognitive functions in individuals with heart failure.
In addition to reduced physical capacity, individuals with heart failure may also experience impairments in attention, memory and other cognitive functions. The study will investigate whether strengthening the muscles involved in breathing through inspiratory muscle training can contribute to improvements in these cognitive functions.
The research will compare standard inspiratory muscle training with dual-task-oriented inspiratory muscle training, which combines physical and cognitive tasks simultaneously. A total of 54 patients with heart failure are planned to participate in the study and will be assigned to standard training, dual-task training and control groups.
In addition to cognitive functions, the project will assess changes in several other areas, including respiratory function, respiratory muscle strength and endurance, exercise capacity, fatigue, physical performance and quality of life.
The project will be conducted under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Rengin Demir from the Institute of Cardiology at Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa with Prof. Dr. Işıl Uzunhasan, also from the Institute of Cardiology at Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa, serving as a researcher.
