A study conducted by Assoc. Prof. Nevra Alkanlı, a faculty member of the Department of Basic Medical Sciences, Division of Biophysics, at Haliç University Faculty of Medicine, investigated the relationship between genetic variants in the matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) gene family and the development and clinical characteristics of multiple sclerosis (MS).
The study evaluated the potential role of the MMP1 rs1799750, MMP2 rs243865 and rs2285053, and MMP3 rs3025058 genetic variants in MS pathogenesis. The findings revealed that genetic variants in MMP2 and MMP3, in particular, were significantly associated with susceptibility to MS. However, these variants were not found to be directly associated with disease severity parameters, such as relapse frequency and disease duration.
The findings were considered to support the potential role of MMPs, particularly during the immunopathological phase of the disease. The study also indicated that MMP genetic variations could be considered not only as disease-associated markers but also as potential biomarkers that may contribute to risk assessment in the early stages of the disease.
The study highlighted that evaluating MMP genetic profiles alongside clinical and environmental factors could contribute to the development of personalized medicine approaches to MS management. It was emphasized that future research into treatments targeting these enzyme systems in individuals carrying high-risk MMP genotypes could make significant contributions to early intervention and personalized treatment approaches for MS.
The research indicated that genetic variants in MMP2 and MMP3 may be associated with susceptibility to MS. It also showed that genotype and haplotype distributions reflect the genetic heterogeneity of the disease and highlight the importance of individual risk profiles.
We congratulate our faculty member on this achievement and wish her continued success.
