Article by Associate Professor Nevra Alkanlı Published in a Q1 Journal

An article titled “Differential Roles of IL-18 and IL-8 Gene Variations in Multiple Sclerosis: Associations with Susceptibility and MRI Disease Activity” authored by Associate Professor Nevra Alkanlı, a faculty member of the Department of Biophysics, Department of Basic Medical Sciences, Faculty of Medicine at Haliç University, has been published in the Journal of Clinical Medicine, a Q1-ranked journal indexed in Scopus and the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE) of Web of Science.

The study aimed to investigate the roles of IL-8 and IL-18 gene variations in susceptibility to Relapsing-Remitting Multiple Sclerosis (RRMS) and to evaluate their associations with clinical and radiological disease characteristics within an RRMS cohort, particularly MRI lesion burden and lesion dynamics observed during the follow-up period.

The findings suggest that IL-18 and IL-8 gene variations contribute to multiple sclerosis through distinct yet complementary mechanisms. While IL-18 was found to be primarily associated with disease susceptibility and baseline inflammatory burden, IL-8 was more closely linked to ongoing radiological disease activity. The results underscore the importance of integrating genetic and imaging biomarkers to better understand disease heterogeneity in multiple sclerosis.

We extend our congratulations to Associate Professor Nevra Alkanlı and wish her continued success in her academic studies.
