Established in 1998, Haliç University Department of American Culture and Literature aims to introduce students to the development of American culture and literature from its inception to the present, both through departmental courses and through conferences, seminars and art events organized with other universities.
The program of our department includes language courses that form the basis of culture and literature education in the first two years, and general literature courses such as Mythology and Critical Theories. In addition to these courses, non-field elective courses that students can choose according to their interests are also included in our curriculum. In the last two years, there are courses that examine the history, socio-cultural characteristics and literature of the multicultural American society consisting of different ethnic groups in depth with its historical, cultural and theoretical dimensions, as well as translation and elective courses for professional specialization.
Since the language of instruction in our department is English, it is important for our students to have an advanced level of English. For this reason, it is compulsory for our students with a low level of English to take one year of preparatory education. Students who are successful in the preparatory exemption exam can start their first year directly.
Our department, which started out with the necessity of collaborating with universities from home and abroad, has Erasmus agreements with many universities from countries such as Poland, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Lithuania, and within the framework of these agreements, student and lecturer exchanges are carried out regularly.
Vision
To be a department that has a good command of English and brings qualified people to the society by providing creative, critical and contemporary education with intercultural readings in the field of American Culture and Literature.
