Haliç University 2024-2025 Academic Year Opening Ceremony was held with the participation of Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz.
The ceremony started with the speech of Prof. Dr. Nihat İnanç, Rector of Haliç University. Prof. Dr. İnanç emphasized that Haliç University, one of Turkey's first foundation universities, was established in 1998 and has approximately 30,000 graduates. Stating that the university continues its activities in a closed area of approximately 200,000 m2, Nihat İnanç said, "From the Congress Center to the fully Olympic swimming pools, our university, which serves with its strong infrastructure and all-in-one concept, continues its education and training activities in a total of 12 academic units with 8 faculties, as well as a graduate education institute, conservatory, college and vocational school."
Stating that Haliç University aims to break away from the traditional university understanding, Prof. Dr. Nihat İnanç said, "In line with the reforms of the European Union in the fields of higher education and research, we continue our renewal works. Thematically; Our university, which prioritizes a health- technology based structuring, carries out its studies based on artificial intelligence. In line with the European Union's "New Jobs-New Skills" initiative, we continue our dynamic updates in curriculum and learning ways. We have chosen the " On the Job Learning, Application Based Competency Oriented Graduation" method as a target in our education system. In this context, we aim to increase the application-based competencies of our academicians and students by realizing Sector-University Collaboration and spreading the work of our academicians and students to a wide range of areas such as R&D, projects, publications, patents and commercialization in our Technopark structure, which we are intensively continuing to establish. In the near future, we aim to give science and engineering students the opportunity to graduate by working in the sector in the last year within the scope of compulsory applied education."
Prof. Dr. Nihat İnanç thanked the academic and administrative staff who are the architects of the university's achievements. In his continued speech, İnanç also wished the students success in the new academic year and reminded them of their responsibilities in three main areas:
- Universities are naturally environments where your world of thought matures. Make the most of this. Focus on correct and critical thinking. However, in situations where the future of our homeland and nation is at stake, do not neglect to put aside your intellectual differences and stand as one for our integrity and wholeness. Remember that there are too many enemies waiting in line to destroy us. Keep in mind that we are all in the same vessel.
- Secondly, be the conscience of humanity. Without discriminating between women, children, the sick, the old and the young, openly declare your reaction and attitude to the gangs gathered under the roof of Zionism and their derivatives who massacre humanity. Take the example of students from all over the world today who, despite their different religions and thoughts, have expressed their reactions to the Zionist gangs. Remember that where humanity dies, we will be no difference from the walking dead.
- Thirdly, aim to be the best in your profession, not just a diploma, and do not disappoint the hopes your parents have placed in you. However, do not forget that if you do not show the sensitivity mentioned above in the first two points, neither your diploma nor your profession will save you or us.
Prof. Dr. Nihat İnanç concluded his speech by thanking Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz for attending the program.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the academic year, Mr. Cevdet Yılmaz emphasized the roles of universities in the fields of education, research and social development. He expressed the three main functions of universities in the following words:
“"The first is the education function. Universities should transfer the accumulated knowledge of humanity to future generations in an accurate and effective manner. This is the most fundamental duty of the university. The second is the research function. Adding new knowledge to existing knowledge is the second important task of the university. This should be in a wide range of fields, from social sciences to medicine. The third is the development and social function. Universities should use their knowledge to solve social problems and transform the environment."
Cevdet Yılmaz also drew attention to equal opportunities and emphasized the importance of the increase in the participation rate of women in higher education. Yılmaz said, "The rate of women's access to higher education has increased from 10% to 50%. This is a revolution and I believe that many more women will take part in education in the future."
Cevdet Yılmaz also discussed the work on expanding student dormitories and academic staff and said, "Our dormitory capacity has increased from 182 thousand to 993 thousand and our goal is to increase this number to 1 million. The number of academic staff has reached 185 thousand. We do not consider these achievements sufficient; our goal is to increase the quality of our universities and raise the academic performance of our country even higher."
Finally, Yılmaz emphasized that development is a people-oriented process and summarized the role of universities in this process with the following words:
"The purpose of development is people. Economic development and social welfare aim to improve the quality of life of people. In this context, higher education plays a critical role in the development process of our country."
Cevdet Yılmaz concluded his speech by expressing his belief that Haliç University will successfully carry out this mission.
The program ended after the collective photo shoot.
